We are pleased to present a collection of framed textile artworks created using the traditional techniques of Nishijin weaving, one of Japan’s most celebrated textile traditions.

Founded in 1885, Fujie Textile is one of Japan’s leading textile brands. As a new creative endeavor, the company launched the Textile Art Collection, bringing together exceptional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression. This exhibition features the inaugural series, Shining Mountain, presented as framed works of art.

Shining Mountain is a textile series born from the fusion of traditional Nishijin weaving and contemporary design. By reinterpreting a time-honored craft through a modern lens, the series explores new possibilities for textile expression. Nishijin weaving has been practiced in Kyoto’s Nishijin district since the Heian period (794–1185) and is renowned for its intricate patterns woven from beautifully dyed threads. With a history spanning more than a thousand years, it remains one of Japan’s most distinguished traditional crafts.

The works in Shining Mountain employ Nishijin Kinran, a luxurious weaving technique that incorporates gold and metallic threads. Combining centuries-old craftsmanship with modern technology, Nishijin Kinran is celebrated for its extraordinary detail, richness, and expressive depth.

The series was designed by Tansan Design, an internationally active Japanese textile design studio based in the lush natural surroundings of Shiga Prefecture. Drawing inspiration from everyday life and the beauty of nature, the studio creates designs that balance simplicity with imagination. While many of their works are inspired by familiar subjects, Shining Mountain originated from a local legend associated with Tachikiyama, a mountain in Shiga where designer Wakana Mizuno spent her childhood.

Each textile is meticulously handcrafted, revealing the remarkable beauty of the medium. The lustrous sheen of silk threads, vivid color combinations, shifting hues that change with the viewing angle, and the dazzling brilliance of gold threads create a captivating visual experience. By allowing certain threads to float above the woven surface, the artisans introduce a subtle three-dimensionality, giving the works depth, texture, and an ever-changing presence.
