下村豊氏は顔料や絵具等を一切使わず、金属の化学変化を活かし、自然が生み出す美しい色彩を融合させることで作品を生み出しています。鉄や銅の版を意図的に錆びさせ、その痕跡を和紙や布へと転写します。温度や湿度など自然環境との繊細な関係の中で、鉄分と微量な物質が反応し、独自の色を生み出しています。
転写に要する時間そのものが、作品のテーマである「時間の流れ」を象徴しており、長年にわたる試行錯誤の末にたどり着いた、銅色・藍色・水色・緑色などの有機的な色彩が、下村氏ならではの唯一無二の世界観を形づくっています。

“私の作品のテーマは『時の流れ』である。時は過去から、現在そして未来へと流れていく。
その時の流れの中で、人間の無意識の中に、古代から続く人類共通の記憶が残されていると思う。 命の源である海、そして月、太陽、宇宙。それらの自然への畏怖の念、敬意の念は、その記憶の断片の一つであろう。時の流れの中で、そのような記憶を呼び覚ませるような作品を制作したいと思っている。”

Harnessing the chemical transformation of metal, Yutaka Shimomura fuses the raw beauty of nature’s hues into his creations. Polished iron and copper plates are deliberately oxidized, then transferred onto washi paper or fabric. Through the delicate interplay of temperature and humidity, iron elements and trace substances react—forming colors that seem born of the earth itself. The time required for each transfer becomes a metaphor for the central theme: the passage of time. After years of experimentation, Shimomura has mastered an organic palette of copper, indigo, pale blue, and green—each work a singular expression of his distinctive world.
