1880年、岐阜県に生まれた熊谷守一は、日本近代洋画を代表する画家の一人です。
長い画業のなかで、身近な自然や日常の小さな生命に静かに向き合い続けました。
庭の草花や虫、猫といったささやかな存在を簡潔な線と澄んだ色面で表現するその作風は、晩年になるほど大胆に、そして本質的なかたちへと研ぎ澄まされていきます。
世俗的な評価や名声から距離を置き、東京・豊島区の自宅で質素な暮らしを貫いたことから 「画壇の仙人」とも称されました。
しかしその作品は決して孤高なだけではなくあたたかなまなざしと深い観察に満ちています。 対象を徹底して見つめ不要なものをそぎ落とすことで、生命の確かさと静かな輝きを画面に定着させました。

Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1880, Morikazu Kumagai was one of the leading figures of modern Western-style painting in Japan. Throughout his long artistic career, he continued to quietly engage with the small, familiar forms of life found in everyday surroundings. Flowers and insects in his garden, cats, and other humble subjects were rendered with simplified lines and clear planes of color. As he grew older, his style became increasingly bold and refined, distilled to its essential forms.
Keeping his distance from worldly fame and artistic circles, he lived a modest life at his home in Toshima, Tokyo, earning the nickname “the hermit of the art world.” Yet his works are far from austere. They are filled with warmth and deep observation. By studying his subjects intently and stripping away all that was unnecessary, he succeeded in capturing the quiet radiance and undeniable presence of life itself.
The spirit that defines his paintings is equally present in the woodblock prints featured in this exhibition. The medium of woodblock printing—with its honest, vigorous lines and vivid yet composed colors—further emphasizes the essence of Kumagai’s art.
